In the Garden

Text Box: Welcome to the April issue of In the Garden. Spring has finally arrived, and with it the rain, fluctuating temperatures, and mud – and the flowers! Crocuses, tulips, daffodils, forsythia, cherry trees, magnolias, azaleas… It seems like everything is suddenly blooming. After a long grey winter, the riot of color is a welcome relief and never fails to bring a smile to the face of even the most seasoned gardener. We know that the rest of the garden is slowly waking up and that soon the poppies, peonies, and roses will unfurl their petals to reveal brightly-colored interiors. Summer can’t be far behind!
Text Box: In this issue we share tips on growing some of your favorite plants, suggest ways to reduce the size of your lawn, share advice on growing seeds, review gardening gloves, and introduce you to Mary Jo Bridge Palmer of Sam Bridge Nurseries and Greenhouse. There’s also a list of upcoming gardening events and a description of things to do in the garden. There’s never a dull moment in the May garden!

Text Box: Spring Has Sprung!
Text Box: Create an escape hatch for the little critters! If you have an outdoor fountain or water feature with a reservoir more than 4 inches deep, be sure to put a tall rock or brick inside the reservoir up against one side so a critter who has jumped in for a swim can get out again. Text Box: Alternatively, put a sturdy stick in the bottom and lean it up against one side to act as a bridge to safety. Nothing worse than wondering “What’s that horrible smell?” when you’re passing by…
